To the courageous allies and members of the Latinx community,
Originally known as [Black] History Week in 1926, February being a time dedicated to visibility and celebration of notable, black, historical figures was officially declared as Black History Month in 1976 (ASALH, n.d.). Since then, each U.S. president has annually proclaimed their endorsement of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History’s (ASALH) yearly themes. Antioch University celebrates the presence of African Americans in the United States and acknowledges that diversity is a pillar of this nation’s foundation. We at the Antioch Latinx Mental Health and Social Justice Institute would like to invite you to recognize and appreciate the AfroLatine community during this time of unity and hope.
At the Latinx Institute, we have been working hard to bring our community more resources to acknowledge, educate, and share about Latin American culture and communities. Please visit the Latinx Institute website to view our new AfroLatine Culture page. There, you can find information and resources about AfroLatine traditions, languages, and identities, in addition to suggestions for how to be an active supporter of AfroLatinx communities. More updates to the Latinx Institute website resource pages are coming soon!
Please visit the following resources to strengthen your knowledge of African American and AfroLatinx History in the United States:
- National Civil Rights Museum: The National Civil Rights Museum, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is an excellent resource for learning about the history of African Americans in the United States.
- Unidos: Unidos is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to civil rights and racial equity, housing and financial empowerment, immigration, voting and political empowerment, workforce development, etc.
In Solidarity of Black History Month,
The Latinx Institute Team
