To our beloved community,
It is our pleasure at The Latinx Mental Health & Social Justice Institute to wish all a bountiful New Year. We wish our greetings could carry more hope and good news, but our thoughts remain with those struggling with the presence of ICE in their homes in North Carolina, Chicago, Illinois, Portland, Oregon, Vermont; the list continues. We are shocked by the news of ICE shootings in Portland and the murders of Keith Porter and Renee Good. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and our community in Minneapolis and Portland. Please seek support when you need it. If you are a student, remember that you have access to mental health services through Well Connect.
We would like to thank our partners, El Futuro and Amexcan, for their efforts in providing support, resources, and regular updates. Visit their sites for more information. We advise our Latine family to be confidently aware of your rights, stay informed wherever you are, and let us know if we can assist you in finding local support and resources. To allies of the Latine community, please stay safe and informed, research using reputable sources, get involved with local support services as you are able, contact lawmakers, and help spread truthful, useful, and relevant information. Being an active supporter can also involve participating in peaceful protests, posting on social media, donating to local organizations, or even sharing resources by word-of-mouth.
As we start this new year it is imperative that we stay mindful of what communities are in need of, and how we can help them. For many in the greater Latine community, 2025 was a year filled with fear, loss, frustration, and suffering. But we must not forget the moments of hope, unity, peaceful protest, and success. This new year, we ask that you stay active in the fight to protect and support the Latine community. While some of us enjoyed time off with family and friends over the holidays, remember that under our current administration, that feeling of peace and safety is a privilege, not a right. Take a moment to notice even just one way that you can make a difference for the Latine community while they fight for rights that they already earned. This year, choose to celebrate and lift up the Latinx voices in your community; we are better together.
