Meet Dr. Mariela Nuñez-Janes
Our 2025 Symposium Keynote Speaker
Dr. Nuñez-Janes is a Professor of Anthropology, affiliate faculty with the Latino/a Mexican American Studies Program (LMAS), and former President of the Council on Anthropology and Education (CAE). Her scholarly activism is fueled by her applied research in Latinx immigrant education and participatory methodologies. Dr. Nuñez-Janes is the recipient of multiple awards and honors for her engaged research, including the 2024 Society for Applied Anthropology Hackenberg Prize for sustained and meaningful collaborations to improve communities for her work with the Bilingual Homework Hotline (BHH) and the Association of Latina and Latino Anthropologists (ALLA) Nuevas Direcciones Award. Dr. Nuñez-Janes is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, including the award-winning book Eclipse of Dreams: The Undocumented-Led Struggle for Freedom (2020). She dedicates her career to transforming U.S. schooling through research and advocacy that focus on recovering the cultural assets, funds of knowledge, and navigational capital of Latinx, immigrant, and multilingual students.
